Use the Flooring Area & Wastage Calculator when you need a clear room-by-room quantity record for a flooring enquiry. It separates the area you measure from the material you may need to order. The short visual guide below shows the workflow; this article explains the choices behind each step.

1. Choose units and enter the rooms
Open the calculator and select metres or feet. For a rectangular room, enter length and width in the same unit. Add another room when the project covers more than one space, and rename each entry so the summary stays useful. For an irregular space, choose the measured-area option and use the quantity from an appropriate measured plan. Avoid forcing an L-shaped room into one oversized rectangle. The sample-room buttons add illustrative entries; they are not verified dimensions for your HDB flat or condominium.

2. Make inclusions and exclusions visible
Keep the included-room checkbox selected only for spaces in the intended scope. If the project covers bedrooms but leaves the kitchen or balcony unchanged, record that distinction. Measure doorways, recesses and transitions consistently with the provider’s method. The worked example uses a 20 m² living room and a 12 m² bedroom, giving 32 m². Check the room names and dimensions before calculating, because accurate arithmetic cannot correct an incorrect measurement.
3. Enter the ordering assumptions
Ask the supplier to confirm the allowance for the actual product, room geometry and laying pattern. The starting 10% is editable, not a universal recommendation. If the product is sold in packs, enter the coverage printed on the actual product information. The screenshot shows a hypothetical 2.5 m² pack. Leaving pack coverage blank means the tool cannot round the order to whole packs. Broadloom roll widths, seams and pattern matching need a separate cutting plan.

4. Read the result and keep the record
Click Calculate area. For the example, 32 × 1.10 gives a target of 35.2 m². Dividing by 2.5 and rounding up gives 15 packs, or 37.5 m². The extra from pack rounding is 2.3 m² beyond the target. Use this area in Budget Planner carries the measured and order quantities within the same browser tab when browser storage is available. Alternatively, copy the summary or print/save it as a PDF. Confirm the final measured layout and product-specific order with the provider before buying material.
Read the example quantity record
| Input or result | Example | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | 5 × 4 m = 20 m² | Illustrative rectangular room |
| Bedroom | 4 × 3 m = 12 m² | Illustrative rectangular room |
| Measured area | 32 m² | Included room areas added together |
| Allowance input | 10% = 3.2 m² | Demonstration only; confirm for the product and layout |
| Target area | 35.2 m² | Measured area plus the allowance |
| Pack coverage | 2.5 m² per pack | Hypothetical coverage; use the actual product value |
| Whole packs and order | 15 packs = 37.5 m² | Target divided by coverage, rounded up |
Pack rounding adds 2.3 m² beyond the 35.2 m² target. It does not establish batch availability, return terms or a broadloom cutting plan.
PUT THE GUIDE INTO PRACTICE
Use your own room measurements and quoted details in the workbook.
Open the Area & Wastage Calculator →Practical questions
Can I use the room presets as my flat’s dimensions?
No. They are illustrative entries. Rename and replace them with the dimensions of your own rooms.
How do I enter an L-shaped room?
Use non-overlapping rectangles as separate entries, or choose measured area and enter a properly measured net quantity. Avoid counting the shared part twice.
Can I deduct a wardrobe footprint?
Confirm whether flooring is intended under that unit and follow the selected system’s installation instructions. Do not assume every fixed or modular unit should be included or excluded.
