A new finish over an existing surface

Architectural film is a decorative surface applied over a suitable substrate. 3M presents DI-NOC as an architectural resurfacing range with separate interior and exterior options. A generic furniture sticker and a specified architectural finish should not be assumed to have the same application limits.

Identify the exact range and finish code, then request its application instructions. Confirm which substrate, primer and adhesive system are proposed. The existing surface remains part of the finished result.

Decide whether resurfacing is appropriate

Assess cabinet doors, wall panels and joinery for damage before discussing colours. Film does not repair a swollen core, loose laminate, moving joint or persistent moisture problem. Ask whether defective parts need replacing or preparation before wrapping.

For kitchens, describe the actual locations near appliances, water and heat. Obtain product-specific confirmation rather than assuming a wood-look finish can go everywhere. Ask the installer to test compatibility and agree what conditions would prevent the work from proceeding.

Edges and returns decide the finish

A broad flat sample shows colour but not workmanship at handles, hinges, corners or curved edges. Request a completed sample demonstrating the proposed edge return and seam placement. Agree which faces are included: outside only, inside returns or complete doors.

If appliances or hardware must be removed, assign responsibility in the quote. Ask how access panels remain usable and how repairs will be carried out without creating a conspicuous patch.

Compare resurfacing with replacement

Item Questions to resolve
Existing condition Which parts can stay, and which must be repaired or replaced?
Scope Doors, frames, returns, exposed sides and hardware removal included?
Finish Same code, batch and grain direction?
Workmanship Primer, preparation, seams and edge details specified?
Handover Cleaning instructions and separate product/workmanship terms?

Compare the same finished outcome. A film quotation covering only door fronts is not equivalent to replacing an entire cabinet assembly.

Build a coordinated palette

Bring film, flooring and wallcovering samples together. Several unrelated wood grains can compete in a small room; record their tone, scale and direction before committing. Use a larger sample under the final lighting.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does film restore a damaged cabinet structure?

No. Assess swelling, loose layers, joints and hardware first. Repair or replace unsound parts before proposing a decorative surface refresh.

Are interior and exterior film references equivalent?

No. Confirm the named range and its intended application. An interior finish should not inherit exposure permission from a separate exterior product.

What should I see in a wrapping sample?

Review the selected finish on a representative substrate, including corners, returns and exposed ends. Use the sample and product code in the written proposal.
