Separate tiles from natural stone
Ceramic and porcelain tiles are manufactured materials. Natural stone is quarried and processed; options such as marble, granite and limestone have different characteristics. A stone-look porcelain tile is not the same material as the stone it resembles.
Ask for the exact material, product code, dimensions and finish. For natural stone, clarify the stone type and expected variation. For manufactured tiles, ask about batch, shade and size consistency.
Choose a finish for the actual room
A polished showroom sample may look different under everyday lighting or when wet. Discuss entryways, bathrooms, kitchens and exterior areas separately. Ask for relevant slip-performance information for the intended application.
Do not assume a single texture or rating answers every use case. The test method, conditions and complete surface specification matter. Check suitability with the supplier and project professional before specifying a surface for wet or public areas.
Installation is more than laying the pieces
Ask how the substrate will be prepared and what adhesive, grout and movement-joint details are proposed. Where waterproofing is part of the project, confirm its scope and responsibility separately.
Discuss floor levels, falls where needed, transitions at doors, edge details and the layout of cuts. Large-format materials or natural stone may need different handling and preparation from a smaller ceramic tile.
Keep responsibility for substrate work, waterproofing and finish installation clear in the quotation, rather than assuming every item is included in the material price.
Care and sealing need the exact material
The Natural Stone Institute provides material-specific care resources. Before using a cleaner or sealer, ask for instructions suited to the stone, finish and any existing treatment.
A sealing recommendation for one stone should not be transferred to every tile or natural-stone floor. Confirm whether sealing is required, what it is intended to do and the maintenance interval for the specified system.
What a complete quotation should explain
- Material, finish, size, batch and allowance for cuts.
- Removal, disposal and substrate preparation.
- Adhesive, grout, edge treatments and movement details.
- Any waterproofing or drainage work, with clear exclusions.
- Cleaning, sealing where specified and handover requirements.
Compare full scope, not just the price per tile or square metre. Physical samples, a planned layout and written care instructions make the selection easier to assess before work starts.
