Flooring Comparisons

Vinyl vs Laminate Flooring in Singapore

Compare construction, room suitability and the installation system behind two wood-look flooring families.

Compare products, not labels

Vinyl and laminate can offer similar decorative appearances while using different constructions. Vinyl is a resilient flooring family with flexible and rigid formats. Laminate commonly uses a decorative surface over a wood-based core. Within either category, collections can differ in joints, backing, dimensions and permitted use.

Choose two actual products to compare. Record the collection and code, then obtain their datasheets, installation guides and care terms. The material name begins the discussion; it does not finish the specification.

What the construction tells you

Factor Vinyl questions Laminate questions
Layer information What are the core, wear surface and backing? What are the surface, core and balancing layers?
Thickness What is total thickness and what is the stated wear layer? What is total thickness and declared application or wear classification?
Joints Which fixing or locking system applies? Which locking system and movement details apply?
Underlay Is backing attached, or is an approved separate layer needed? Which underlay is specified for this product and substrate?

Water-related claims need conditions

Ask what each supplier means by water resistant or waterproof: which exposures are included, how edges and joints must be installed, which rooms are permitted and what cleaning is allowed. A claim about the surface does not remove the need to assess moisture below either covering.

Avoid selecting a bathroom or other wet-area system from a general comparison alone. The exact product, full installation and property requirements have to support that use. If the answer is conditional, record the conditions beside the sample.

Installation can change the comparison

Check the substrate survey, flatness requirements, moisture approach and transitions. A rigid or locking product still needs the preparation specified by its manufacturer. An underlay can be part of the assembly, but it should not be added simply to make a sample feel softer.

Quick-Step publishes separate vinyl and laminate installation guidance. Its own laminate system is not intended for glue-down installation. That is a product-specific example of why an installation method cannot be transferred solely because two floors have a similar appearance.

Compare daily life and repair

  • View the surface and pattern under the planned lighting.
  • Ask for the approved routine cleaning method.
  • Check the relevant evidence for furniture or chair use.
  • Discuss access to a damaged board within the laid floor.
  • Ask about spare stock and future matching.

Neither a small sample nor a material-wide stereotype establishes scratch performance, sound reduction or lifespan for the product being quoted. Keep these questions tied to documents and the intended use.

Choose from the complete proposal

Compare the same area, preparation, installation and accessories. If one product needs a different transition or preparation scope, include that difference in the total and programme. State why your shortlisted product fits the room and which limitations you accept.

Read the vinyl guide, laminate guide and quotation checklist before committing.
