What SPC and rigid-core labels tell you
SPC identifies a rigid-core construction used in parts of the vinyl flooring market. Rigid-core is a broader description; exact formulations and backing arrangements vary. Some SPC products are also described as LVT because the two labels answer different questions.
Use the core description as the beginning of a specification, not a verdict on quality. Tarkett's Elegance Rigid 55 is one manufacturer example of an SPC-based collection; its published properties belong to that collection and cannot be transferred to every SPC product.
Examine the locking system and complete backing
Ask for the installation instructions and confirm how the long and short edges connect. Follow the approved assembly sequence and tools. A click mechanism does not mean all systems can be tapped, folded or repaired in the same way.
Check whether the product has attached backing. If an additional underlay is proposed, request written confirmation that the exact combination is permitted. Ask about the tested acoustic assembly rather than comparing an isolated marketing number.
Rigid does not mean preparation-free
Inspect the existing substrate for contamination, unstable areas, cracks, moisture concerns and unevenness. Compare the site against the selected product's preparation requirements. Do not treat a rigid core as permission to leave an unsuitable substrate underneath.
For an overlay proposal, record the existing finish, joints and height changes. Ask the installer to explain any treatment of grout lines, door clearances and transitions. Manufacturer systems may allow different tolerances; avoid importing one brand's limits into another product.
Ask precise questions about exposure and movement
Record direct sunlight, air-conditioning patterns, fixed cabinetry and room connections. Ask which temperature and exposure conditions the current instructions permit, and where movement allowances or breaks in the installation are required.
Separate a water-resistance claim about the plank from the condition of the substrate and the room's complete moisture-management requirements. Ask what the warranty excludes and who investigates moisture-related failure. Do not use a flooring label as evidence that an existing leak is resolved.
Compare shortlisted SPC products on the same basis
Keep a product record for each option: core construction, dimensions, wear specification, backing, locking system, installation instructions, test documents, cleaning instructions and warranty provider.
For commercial use, document traffic and equipment as well as appearance. For a home, include daylight, furniture and everyday cleaning. Compare the complete preparation and installed scope, then ask how a damaged board could be accessed and whether spare matching material can be supplied.
Frequently asked questions
Is SPC the same as all rigid vinyl?
SPC is a core category. Other rigid or hybrid constructions exist, so request the exact product documentation.
Does a rigid core allow installation on an uneven floor?
Only the product-specific installation limits can answer that question. Assess and prepare the substrate against those limits.
Does attached backing remove all moisture checks?
No. Backing and underlay requirements are separate from investigating the existing substrate and moisture concerns.
