Approve the crop before the order
Ask for a scaled artwork layout on the actual elevation. Compare the focal point, horizon, repeated elements and any enlargement with the furnishing plan. Keep the approved version identifiable so later changes are traceable.
For custom artwork, clarify what the supplier needs from the file and whether a proof or physical print sample is available. Do not assume that a social-media image has the quality or permitted use needed for a commissioned mural.
Turn the idea into a project brief
Begin with the actual space, the existing surface and the intended result. Keep photographs, measurements and the proposed reference together so the supplier and installer are working from the same brief. Review these details before approving the sample:
- Wall dimensions. Record the proposed detail and the source used to confirm it.
- openings. Record the proposed detail and the source used to confirm it.
- focal point. Record the proposed detail and the source used to confirm it.
- crop. Record the proposed detail and the source used to confirm it.
- panel order and installation allowance. Record the proposed detail and the source used to confirm it.
Review appearance in the room’s light and beside retained finishes. An editorial image can help with proportion and mood; it cannot establish the physical texture, exact colour or documented performance of the product you will order.
Keep a reference-specific product record
| Record | What to obtain |
|---|---|
| Identity | Brand, collection, reference code, finish and current document edition. |
| Construction | Wall dimensions; openings; focal point. Identify the complete proposed configuration. |
| Application | Written suitability and exposure limits for the exact location, with unanswered points marked for confirmation. |
| Installation | Current instructions, supporting products, preparation responsibilities and details at interruptions. |
| Care & local terms | Reference-specific care guidance, supplier warranty, availability and arrangements for later matching or repair. |
Keep product evidence separate from an installer’s quotation and the supplier’s local terms. A document for another range or assembly should not be treated as proof for the reference being offered. Use the material evidence guide to organise the record.
Agree on scope before ordering
Ask the proposal to distinguish material supply, removal, preparation, installation and finishing. Resolve access, protection of retained surfaces, waste allowance and any separately commissioned work. Compare alternatives using the same project scope, rather than a headline material price.
Before handover, keep approved samples, product codes, care documents and the final installation record together. Clarify which spare material or reference information should be retained and how any outstanding work will be documented.
Questions before you commit
Does the material or brand name establish suitability?
No. The exact reference, proposed location and complete installation need to be checked together. Ask the supplier to resolve any missing evidence before ordering.
Can an inspiration image replace a physical sample?
No. Use imagery to discuss composition, then review a physical sample and current product documents for the supplied reference.
What should a useful quotation include?
It should identify the exact reference and the installed scope, including preparation, finishing, responsibilities, exclusions and the supplier’s local terms.
