What LVT describes

Luxury vinyl tile is a market term for modular vinyl flooring. Products may be sold as tiles or planks, with wood, stone or other decorative finishes. A plank format is often described as LVP. The visual effect does not identify the core, backing or installation method.

Record the exact brand, collection and product code before comparing two samples. Rigid-core products may also be marketed as LVT, so the LVT and SPC labels are not a clean either/or split.

Choose a format and a layout

Compare the actual tile or plank size against the room dimensions. Consider the direction of the pattern, the position of joins, narrow perimeter cuts and transitions into adjacent rooms. A herringbone pattern needs a product and system documented for that layout.

View several pieces together, not just a small swatch. Ask how often the printed design repeats, whether colours vary between pieces and which direction the manufacturer recommends for the selected product.

Separate the finish from the construction

Read the datasheet as a collection of different properties. Overall thickness describes the complete product; the wear specification concerns the surface system. Backing and core construction affect the installation assembly. None of those labels alone proves suitability for every room.

For an office or commercial brief, identify the expected chair movement, traffic and cleaning regime. Ask which product-specific documents support the proposed use. Keep acoustic evidence attached to the tested backing and installation assembly.

Match the product to an installation system

LVT ranges include different installation approaches. Forbo publishes separate guidance for Dryback, Flex and other LVT systems; those documents illustrate why one generic method is insufficient.

Ask who will assess and prepare the substrate, which adhesive or accessory is approved, and how edges, transitions and fixed joinery are handled. Check access or curing restrictions in the selected system instructions. Do not assume an attractive floor sample can simply be laid over any existing finish.

Write a design and product brief

Give suppliers a plan, room photographs and the intended layout. Ask them to identify the exact collection and colour, the quantity basis, spare material, preparation scope and installation system in writing.

Agree whether the quote includes removal and disposal, levelling work, trims, skirting, delivery and taxes. Specify what is excluded. Request both product warranty terms and the installer's workmanship scope, then compare like-for-like totals.

Frequently asked questions

Is every LVT product glue-down?

No. Installation is product-specific. Read the documentation for the exact range rather than inferring the method from the LVT name.

Are LVT tiles and planks the same design choice?

They are modular formats with different sizes and visual layouts. Compare a full layout and the selected product documents.

Can I use any plank for herringbone?

Use a product and locking or adhesive system specifically documented for the chosen layout. Ask how handed pieces and border details are handled.
