SPECIALIST MATERIAL GUIDE / SINGAPORE
Wallpaper Types & Materials in Singapore
Separate the visible finish, backing and hanging system. Compare paper, non-woven, vinyl-faced, textile and natural wallcoverings with the documents for the actual reference.
A design name is not a material specification
Botanical, linen-look, stone-look and geometric describe appearance. Paper, non-woven and vinyl describe different aspects of construction, and a vinyl face may sit on a non-woven backing. Ask the supplier to identify the face, backing and any special treatment separately.
Keep the collection and reference code attached to the sample. Write down roll width, length, repeat, match and hanging direction. Those details connect the design you like with the product the installer will order.
Compare five material routes
Paper products, non-woven backings, vinyl-faced finishes, textile surfaces and natural-fibre wallcoverings can lead to different preparation, hanging and care proposals. Arte publishes separate instructional resources by construction, illustrating why the hanging method should come from the chosen reference.
Treat each family as a starting point for questions. A textured-looking surface is not automatically a textile, and a vinyl label is not permission for every cleaning method or moisture exposure.
Paper constructions
Check whether paper describes the face, backing or both. Keep the actual hanging sheet with the roll label and ask which preparation, adhesive and matching requirements apply. Do not substitute a hanging method from a similar-looking design.
Non-woven backings
A non-woven backing can support different decorative faces. Record the face separately, then confirm the product-specific hanging method and care guidance. The backing label alone does not establish the texture, cleaning limits or intended room.
Vinyl-faced wallcoverings
Ask what the vinyl description covers and identify the backing beneath it. Obtain the reference-specific cleaning and exposure guidance. A durable-looking finish or general washable claim should not replace the actual care sheet or wall-condition assessment.
Textile & natural surfaces
Separate a real textile or natural surface from a printed textile-look design. Ask about expected panel variation, seams, hanging direction and care. View a larger display where possible; some natural products intentionally reveal differences between strips.
Review the surface at room scale
A smooth print, raised surface and irregular natural texture read differently under side lighting. View the sample close up, from the doorway and beside the retained floor or joinery. Ask whether seams, shade variation or natural irregularity are expected features of the selected wallcovering.
For a room with large windows, record the light direction and ask about the actual product’s exposure guidance. A digital room image helps with composition; it cannot establish the physical finish or its performance.
Turn labels into a product record
Ask for the hanging sheet supplied with the reference, the adhesive specification, care symbols and any required project evidence. Record the permitted location and identify unanswered questions before ordering. Commercial, scrub-resistant and similar descriptions need their own documented scope.
Compare quotations using the same wall plan, removal and preparation assumptions. Include repeat allowance, finishing at corners and openings, and the supplier’s arrangements for matching additional rolls.
Choose the material before ordering the pattern
If your main concern is texture, compare physical swatches with the same wall and care brief. If it is a mural composition, move to the mural guide and approve the full layout. If it is ease of installation, ask the installer to price the approved product system rather than choosing a backing on a broad claim.
A useful shortlist explains which requirements each reference meets, what remains unconfirmed and which design differences matter in the room.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Are vinyl and non-woven wallpaper mutually exclusive?
No. A vinyl-faced wallcovering can have a non-woven backing. Record the face and backing separately, then use the instructions for the exact reference.
Does a linen-look design mean the surface is real fabric?
No. Linen-look may describe a printed or embossed appearance. Ask for the actual face material, backing and care instructions.
Will natural wallcovering always hide its seams?
Do not assume that it will. Some natural products intentionally show panel variation or joins. Review the collection’s expected appearance and a larger display before ordering.
