Flooring Comparisons
Click-Lock vs Glue-Down Flooring in Singapore
Installation method is part of the product system. Compare preparation, transitions and repair access on that basis.
Begin with the approved system
Click-lock products connect at their edges; glue-down products are fixed with a specified adhesive system. The product’s instructions establish the approved method. A floor sold for one method should not be converted to another simply because a contractor prefers it.
Ask the supplier to identify the selected collection, fixing method and accessories in the quotation. If an alternative is proposed, request the manufacturer support for that complete proposal before accepting it.
Both methods need preparation
Assess the existing substrate for the selected covering and system. Ask about flatness, moisture, soundness, contamination and previous adhesive. Neither locking joints nor adhesive automatically correct an unsuitable base.
Record preparation separately. If the condition is hidden until removal, agree how additional work will be assessed and approved. Use the product and adhesive requirements to judge readiness rather than a universal online tolerance.
Compare the complete installation
| Issue | Click-lock questions | Glue-down questions |
|---|---|---|
| Assembly | What backing or underlay is approved? | Which adhesive and preparation system are specified? |
| Movement | What perimeter and transition details are required? | What joints and movement details apply to the system? |
| Use after installation | When may furniture and planned loads be introduced? | What curing or use restrictions does the adhesive system require? |
| Future repair | How is a damaged piece accessed within the layout? | How is a piece lifted and its base prepared for replacement? |
| Costs | Include preparation, accessories, trims and labour. | Include preparation, adhesive, trims and labour. |
Check edges, doors and furniture
Discuss thresholds, adjoining surfaces and changes of level before installation. Ask how the system works with fitted furniture and any fixed objects under the selected manufacturer’s instructions. The details should be planned while product and layout choices can still change.
A beautiful main area can still be difficult to use if a door no longer clears or a transition is unresolved. Include these details in the scope rather than leaving them as decisions for installation day.
Avoid universal speed and cost claims
Installation duration depends on the room, preparation, layout, access and system requirements. Glue-down may involve adhesive-related timing; a locking floor may involve detailed movement and transition planning. Ask for the programme for the actual proposal.
Compare the same area and completed scope. A supply-only material price cannot establish which installation system is cheaper after preparation and accessories are added.
Make the choice reviewable
- Confirm that the product supports the chosen method.
- Record the substrate assessment and preparation.
- Specify backing, underlay, adhesive and accessories.
- Resolve transitions and access.
- Agree use restrictions, handover and future repair.
