Understand the solid-board description

NWFA defines solid wood flooring as wood through the full board thickness. Species, grade and finish still need identifying. A solid-board label does not by itself establish the selected room’s suitability or the quality of an installation proposal.

Keep the actual product code, origin information provided by the supplier and a labelled sample. If certification or sourcing claims influence your choice, ask for the documents that cover that reference rather than assuming every item from a brand shares them.

Choose timber appearance at room scale

Discuss colour range, knots, grain, grading, board width and length distribution. A small sample is only one part of a natural material. View a representative spread and agree the level of visible variation before ordering.

Review the floor under daytime and evening light beside wall and joinery samples. Herringbone, straight runs and other layouts have different detailing needs; have the selected layout measured and quoted rather than calculating solely from a room-area figure.

Build the moisture and room brief

Record site conditions, existing moisture concerns and how the room is normally occupied and conditioned. Ask the flooring professional to specify the required assessment and product-specific conditioning or installation steps.

Keep water leaks and substrate defects separate from the decorative choice. Do not cover an unresolved problem simply because the proposed timber finish looks suitable. See Wood Flooring & Moisture for the questions to take to an assessment.

Check the proposal beneath the timber

Part of the project Agree before work
Substrate Assessment, preparation and responsibility for hidden defects.
Fixing Specified installation system and supporting products.
Movement and edges Perimeter, thresholds, skirting and adjoining materials.
Finishing Factory or site finish, protection and access restrictions stated by the provider.
Handover Approved care guidance, warranty documents and defect-reporting route.

Separate supply, preparation, installation, finishing and removal costs. A timber-only price is not a completed floor price.

Plan renewal without unlimited promises

Refinishing requires an assessment of the existing floor, remaining usable wood, flatness and condition. Do not translate “solid wood” into an unlimited sanding claim. The finish, earlier work and board condition all belong in the renewal discussion.

Ask how local damage will be assessed: a finish treatment, board repair, replacement or a more extensive intervention may be different proposals. Keep the professional’s scope and limitations in writing.

Use the right next guide

For a layered-board brief, continue to Engineered Wood. For daily care, use Wood Floor Care. If a fault is already present, begin with Problems & Repair rather than selecting a treatment from a photograph.
