Modular format, many different products

Carpet tiles and planks divide the floor into replaceable modules. The format can help with layout and planned local replacement, but it does not establish traffic performance, stain resistance or acoustic results by itself.

Identify the exact collection, colour, tile dimensions, fibre, pile construction and backing. Record the approved application and installation system. A commercial-looking colour is not a technical traffic rating.

Read the construction and backing

Look beneath the pile. Ask for the backing construction, dimensional-stability information and any cushioning or acoustic data. Check what the stated data refers to: the carpet alone or an assembly with other layers.

Interface offers its own installation systems, including TacTiles for compatible products and spread adhesive. That is a useful example of why the installation method must be tied to the selected product, not chosen simply because it is a carpet tile.

Design the layout and spares together

Check the collection’s permitted orientation: monolithic, quarter-turn, ashlar or other stated layouts. View a larger installed sample when possible. A small swatch may not show the pattern at room scale or the join appearance.

Agree the floor grid, starting points and cut positions around doors, columns and raised-floor panels. Plan a labelled reserve of matching tiles with the supplier, recording quantity, colour and batch information for future repairs.

Ask what happens before the tiles arrive

Request a substrate assessment and a written preparation scope. Confirm moisture-testing requirements, flatness, existing adhesive treatment and any levelling needed against the selected manufacturer’s instructions.

For an occupied office, agree access, phasing, furniture movement and protection of adjacent surfaces. Discuss wheeled-chair use and cleaning arrangements when specifying the product. Compare complete installation proposals rather than carpet supply prices only.

Specify the maintenance and replacement plan

  • Approved vacuuming, spot-treatment and periodic-cleaning methods.
  • Protection during fit-out and responsibility for damage before handover.
  • How tiles are removed, replaced and reinstalled within the chosen system.
  • Availability of matching stock and storage guidance.
  • Written product terms and separate installation workmanship terms.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Are carpet planks a different material from carpet tiles?

Planks describe a rectangular modular format. Compare the fibre, pile, backing and approved application of the actual collection rather than treating its shape as a performance rating.

Can any carpet tile be laid with adhesive-free connectors?

No. Use connectors only where the manufacturer supports the exact carpet and backing. A fixing method approved for one collection does not automatically apply to another.

How many spare carpet tiles should I keep?

Ask the supplier and installer to agree a reserve for the layout, traffic and future repair plan. Keep the product, colour and batch details with the stock; there is no single useful percentage for every project.

Can damaged tiles always be replaced invisibly?

A modular floor can support local replacement, but appearance depends on stock, age, pile direction and installation. Discuss matching and access before ordering, then retain labelled spares where practical.
