Outdoor Flooring Picks in Singapore
Begin where the rain lands.
A field guide to decking, outdoor hard surfaces and artificial grass. Build the shortlist around exposure, water routes and future access.
Explore the shortlist
Start with exposure, not a decking colour
An uncovered terrace and a sheltered balcony are different briefs. Record direct rain, afternoon sun, the existing base, outlets, thresholds, available height and the way the area is cleaned. Include the route used to move furniture and how the space will remain accessible for maintenance.
Inspect the interfaces
Focus on doors, thresholds, the existing base, drain access and management requirements. Shelter does not remove the need to plan water and cleaning.
Specify the exposure
Tell the supplier the location is open to rain and sun. Obtain an appropriate product and support-system proposal rather than adapting an indoor finish.
State the operational brief
Include foot traffic, cleaning equipment, access, applicable project requirements and the replacement plan. Use relevant surface evidence for the intended conditions.
Three outdoor material routes to investigate

Timber or composite decking
Start here when a board-based terrace expression suits the brief. Compare timber and composite as complete systems: board, support, fixing, edge and access detail. Ask for the exact exposure suitability and current installation instructions.
Trex’s guidance gives a manufacturer example of product-specific gapping and fastening. Its dimensions and fixings should not be copied into a different brand’s proposal. The installer should identify which instructions govern the actual board, orientation and support.
Compare decking routes
Tiles or stone with an outdoor specification
Start here when a hard-surface expression is preferred. Request the exact product and finish suitable for the proposed outdoor use, together with relevant slip-resistance evidence and the base, adhesive, grout and movement details required for the system.
Compare a wet-condition brief with the supplier’s stated evidence. Texture seen in a photograph is not a slip-resistance test, and a showroom sample does not describe the installed floor’s water route. Do not select an indoor polished finish solely because it looks similar.
Read the hard-surface guide
Artificial grass for a specific use
Start here when a green visual surface fits the balcony or landscape brief. Specify the turf reference, base, joins, edges, water path and cleaning routine. For a pet area, ask how the complete system will be rinsed and accessed; do not treat the face material as the whole solution.
SYNLawn’s care guidance includes maintenance and drainage checks. This is a useful reminder to ask about ongoing care; it does not establish the same instructions for every turf. Obtain the written routine for the product and site proposed.
Plan an artificial-grass systemFollow the water from surface to outlet
-
At the surface
Where will rain, rinsing water and spills go? Confirm the intended surface conditions and appropriate material evidence.
-
Below the finish
If water passes through gaps or the turf, show the route beneath it. Do not assume an attractive surface corrects an unsuitable base.
-
At the drain
Show which outlets remain accessible, how debris is removed and how the installed system will be lifted if access is required.
-
At the doorway
Show the finished height, door swing and threshold junction. Treat any proposed waterproofing alteration as a separate professional scope.
Request a small, useful mock-up
Review enough of the selected material to see joints, colour variation and an edge. Where appropriate, inspect a sample in comparable daylight and ask the supplier how its surface temperature, care and wear should be assessed for the intended use. Do not make a comfort claim from a cool indoor sample alone.
The quotation should name the support system, preparation, fixings, transitions, drain-access details, removal and maintenance. Obtain any required owner or management approval for the specific work. For an HDB flat, start with the relevant current HDB guidelines; for strata property, establish the applicable management and professional requirements.
Compare the complete proposalQuestions worth asking
Is composite decking maintenance-free?
Ask for the actual care instructions and maintenance access. Do not turn a lower-maintenance marketing description into a promise that cleaning or inspection is unnecessary.
Can a new finish fix balcony ponding?
A finish alone does not establish an adequate drainage solution. Have the existing water path and proposed construction assessed before covering it.
Can I use an indoor plank outside if the balcony is sheltered?
Only use a product and system permitted for the stated exposure. Describe rain, sunlight and temperature conditions to the supplier and obtain the relevant written application guidance.
