Flooring Warranty Checklist: What to Read

Read coverage, conditions and responsibility together before judging a warranty by its duration.

Start with the written terms

An advertised warranty duration is only one part of the promise. Obtain the terms for the exact product and local supply arrangement before paying. Identify the provider, covered application and documents required for a claim. A general brochure for another region may not describe the product or arrangement offered to you.

This checklist helps organise questions. It does not interpret a contract for a particular dispute or establish legal rights beyond the wording you obtain. If a material issue is unclear, resolve it with the relevant provider before committing.

Separate product and installation

A product warranty and an installer’s workmanship arrangement may come from different parties and cover different issues. Ask who assesses a reported defect and who coordinates a response when its cause is not yet established. Keep invoices and installation details available so the relevant system can be identified.

If supply and installation are sold together, still ask how responsibilities are divided. Do not assume every installation issue is a manufacturing defect, or every appearance change is covered simply because the stated duration has not elapsed.

Read the coverage conditions

Question Why it matters
Which product and application? Coverage may depend on the specified collection and permitted use.
Which installation conditions? Substrate, fixing method and approved accessories need to match the instructions.
What care is required? Cleaning and maintenance conditions may affect the claim assessment.
What is excluded? Ask about the stated treatment of scratches, impacts, moisture and other exposures.
What remedy is offered? Clarify material, labour, removal, reinstallation and any limits or deductions.
How is a claim made? Record the contact, evidence requirements and process.

Avoid assumed coverage

A word such as waterproof, lifetime or commercial needs the conditions attached to it. Ask what the term means in the document, whose lifetime is referenced where applicable, which areas are permitted and what the provider actually remedies. Record the answer in writing.

Do not transfer terms from another collection or installation method. A product with attached backing may have a different approved assembly from one using a separate underlay. The installation guide and warranty should be read as a connected set.

Keep a handover record

  • Final invoice and product identification.
  • Copy of the warranty version supplied at purchase.
  • Installation date, installer and agreed scope.
  • Relevant substrate and installation records.
  • Care instructions, spare-stock information and completion photographs.

Good records do not guarantee a claim will be accepted. They make it easier to establish what was supplied, how it was installed and which terms apply.

Questions to send the provider

“Please confirm the warranty for this exact collection and use, the installation system it requires, the exclusions and the remedy. Please also identify the separate workmanship terms and the contact for a future issue.” This request is more useful than asking only how many years the warranty lasts.
