Carpet Backing Singapore: What to Check

The underside of a carpet affects the fixing system, comfort evidence and repair plan.

Identify the backing offered

Carpet backing forms part of the carpet’s construction beneath the visible pile. Backing systems vary between products and formats, so obtain the named backing for the actual collection being quoted. A photograph of the underside is useful for identification but cannot establish every performance property.

Ask whether a colour or collection can be supplied with different backing options. Record the chosen version on the quotation, sample label and installation brief.

Read backing and fixing together

Do not transfer a carpet tile installation method to every broadloom product, or assume that every tile uses the same adhesive. Request the current backing-specific installation instructions and the proposed adhesive, connector or other fixing system.

The Interface APAC manual includes separate backing and accessory provisions. It provides a useful example of why a supplier must identify the exact approved combination. Those provisions are not instructions for unrelated brands.

Separate cushioning from an extra underlay

A cushion backing and a separate underlay describe different configurations. Ask what is included in the supplied carpet and whether any additional layer is permitted. Compare the complete offered system for underfoot feel, chair use and installation height.

A thicker or softer underside is not, by itself, a durability or acoustic rating. Ask for evidence for the intended application and the configuration represented by the sample.

Ask precise moisture questions

Question Useful answer
What conditions are permitted? The product and fixing system’s current site requirements.
How is the base assessed? Specified checks, relevant criteria and who records acceptance.
What does the moisture claim cover? The exposure, limitations and any required accessories.
What remains unresolved? Leaks, unknown substrate conditions or unsupported preparation proposals.

A moisture-related backing claim does not resolve an active leak. See subfloor moisture checks before treating an underside description as a site assessment.

Plan replacement and transitions

Ask how the fixing system affects lifting and reinstatement, what preparation a repair requires and how spare stock will be identified. For an office, coordinate this with furniture movement and service access.

Record the finished height where carpet meets another floor. Compare edges and trims against the actual offered pile and backing. See carpet formats for the wider layout discussion.

Put the configuration in writing

  • Exact carpet collection, colour and backing name.
  • Installation instructions and approved accessories.
  • Assessment and preparation responsibilities.
  • Relevant comfort, sound or use evidence.
  • Care, repair and spare-stock arrangements.

Use the office carpet buying checklist to connect these details to the project brief.
