Flooring Underlay in Singapore: What to Check
Underlay should match the floor and substrate. More cushioning is not automatically a better system.
Underlay belongs to the assembly
A separate underlay sits beneath certain flooring systems and can have functions defined by the manufacturer, such as support, moisture-related layers or acoustic performance. Some products instead have an attached backing. The selected floor determines whether a separate layer is required, permitted or inappropriate.
Begin with the exact product’s installation guide. Ask the supplier to name the underlay and explain why it is approved for the covering and substrate. A generic foam description is not enough to confirm compatibility.
Check the manufacturer’s arrangement
Quick-Step’s laminate instructions include underlay selection, while its vinyl guidance distinguishes products and installation approaches. Some attached-pad products have specific conditions that differ from products needing separate underlay. Follow the actual collection’s instructions rather than treating all locking floors alike.
If a contractor proposes an additional layer beneath an attached backing, request written support for that combination. Do not assume that extra softness improves support or preserves the locking system.
Keep functions separate
| Claim or need | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Support | Is the layer approved for the selected product and expected loading? |
| Moisture control | What layer or membrane is specified, and for which substrate conditions? |
| Acoustics | Which complete assembly and test produced the stated result? |
| Minor surface variation | What substrate tolerances must still be met? |
| Comfort | Can the proposed complete assembly be experienced and documented? |
| Transitions | How does the full build affect doorways and adjoining floors? |
Underlay is not a substitute for assessment
Inspect the substrate and obtain the acceptance criteria for the selected product. A layer marketed with levelling benefits does not give permission to ignore loose finishes, unresolved damp or an out-of-tolerance base. Ask the installer what preparation remains necessary and how readiness will be recorded.
Where the moisture approach includes a membrane, clarify compatibility, continuity and relevant detailing under the product system. Do not treat a soft layer and a moisture barrier as interchangeable simply because both come on a roll.
Understand acoustic evidence
A sound figure needs its test context. Ask which covering, underlay, substrate and assembly were used. Impact sound transmitted through a floor and sound absorption inside a room are different performance questions. Request an explanation suited to the project rather than adding unrelated numbers together.
For a condo, also obtain the building arrangements relevant to the work. A product certificate does not identify every requirement of a specific property. See the condominium planning guide.
Put the approved system in the quotation
- Exact floor and underlay identification.
- Whether the product already includes backing.
- Substrate assessment and preparation.
- Required moisture-related layers and detailing.
- Transitions, care and warranty conditions.
A clear system specification makes future questions easier to resolve. Continue with click-lock vs glue-down and subfloor moisture checks.
