Flooring Expansion Gaps & Transitions
Plan room edges, thresholds and fixed furniture around the installation system’s movement requirements.
Movement details belong in the layout
Some flooring systems require movement space at boundaries or changes in layout. The location, size and treatment depend on the exact product and installation instructions. A gap is a system detail, not a universal dimension that can be copied between all vinyl, laminate and wood products.
Quick-Step’s vinyl installation resources address expansion and edge details for its own systems. Obtain the equivalent instructions for the product supplied to your project before approving a continuous layout.
Check more than the walls
Ask how the installer will detail door frames, pipes, columns, thresholds and changes to another floor. Include long runs, separate rooms and any restrictions identified in the selected instructions. Mark necessary breaks on a plan so they are understood before ordering.
Coordinate the finished appearance with technical requirements. A trim chosen only for colour may not provide the needed geometry or movement arrangement.
Clarify cabinets and fixed furniture
Identify cabinets, islands, partitions and other fixed elements in the brief. Ask whether they can sit over the proposed floor and whether they affect movement. The answer must follow the chosen system; do not assume that all click-lock products have identical restrictions.
Record the intended sequence of cabinet and flooring installation. Resolve any conflict between the interior layout and flooring instructions before either trade begins.
Use a transition schedule
| Location | Detail to approve |
|---|---|
| Doorway | Opening height, edge arrangement and any required break. |
| Change of material | Finished heights, trim profile and fixing. |
| Room perimeter | Movement requirement and skirting or edge finish. |
| Pipe or column | Required clearance and permitted covering detail. |
| Fixed furniture | Installation sequence and system restrictions. |
Do not change a gap without checking
An edge gap that appears unfinished may be concealed by an appropriate detail rather than filled with an arbitrary material. Ask the installer what the specified detail allows. Do not seal, screw through or otherwise alter a movement arrangement based only on appearance.
If boards lift, joints open or a threshold becomes unstable, record the symptoms and request an assessment. Several causes can produce similar symptoms; a photograph does not establish that a gap is the sole cause.
Keep the approved detail for future repairs
Retain the layout, trim information and installation guide. Explain relevant restrictions to anyone later installing cabinetry or repairing the floor. A replacement piece should be coordinated with the existing system rather than treated as an isolated cosmetic patch.
Read click-lock vs glue-down and substrate preparation for the surrounding installation decisions.
